Mellow
“Oh, this dress is too old school!” Every time when we try to clean up the wardrobe, we may find several clothes that are already “out of fashion”, and even being forgotten for a long time. What will you do with those clothing? Most people may flow them away to leave more space for the latest dressing.
Fast Fashion
In the past, there were only two Fashion Seasons each year, which is Spring&Summert, Fall&Winter. However, when more companies turned to “fast fashion”, fashion season became more complex and even up to 52 per year. Brands like H&M launches their new series of clothes every two weeks, rapidly shorten the fashion cycle and make clothes quickly outdated. People are encouraged to buy new clothes to keep up with all the latest fashion trends.
However, do things really go out of fashion? I believe that fashion tend is like a big circle and will come back to it in some time. The old school things at this point may become fashionable again in the future.
20-Year Rule
“Typically, trends are on a 20-year cycle before their first re-appearance” Samantha Brown, a famous New York-based celebrity stylist, said. In fact, you can see lots of old fashion trends are back with a new interpretation. For example, Dior has brought back their Saddle Bag in 2019 since it first appeared in 2000. It immediately became the new black and was loved by many female celebrities, for example, Taiwanese singer Jolin Tsai and Kpop idol Suzy Bae. The bell-bottom is another example that is popular in the 70s and becoming trending again this year.
How can it happen? It is probably related to how fashion designers design new clothing. Geraldine Wharry, a trend designer, and futurist explained, “It’s a starting point for designers to look to past references for design inspiration. So there’s always the element of pulling stories from the past”.
Vintage Style
If you find yourself got outdated clothing or accessories, don’t worry, it will come back to fashion soon. Even if they don't do so, they can turn into a vintage style that is also unique and fascinating. You can absolutely make them more stylish through further mix and match.
Vintage fashion is now popular among GenZ on social media. There are trend on TikTok like the “Fawcett Flip” Hairstyle, and “Vintage Acting Challenge”. You may also see young YouTuber sharing vintage dressing suggestions. Use the video “Unboxing Grandmother's Wardrobe” as an example, a young girl has tried to put on her grandma clothes which were fashionable 40 years ago. Surprisingly, the dressing still looks trendy and gorgeous on her. This video went viral in Taiwan and encouraged more people to try it.
Fashion never dies. Instead of buying new clothes, why not try to mix and match the old ones? They may be the potential dressing for the next fashion trend!
Once you go vintage you never go back😂😍
